Six months with the Motorola Droid
I've had my Droid for around 6 months now. For the most part we've been best friends, but we have had a few falling outs.
Firstly, the good bits:
- Solidity - I don't use a phone case and it often ends up in the same pocket as keys and cash. Because of this it is showing some wear - the screen has a couple of very small scratches (bare noticeable) and the paint around the edge of the screen is just starting to show some wear. Generally though the thing is tough, mainly thanks to the metal construction.
- Stability - The Android operating system is impressive. Both 2.0 and 2.1 have been pretty reliable. I've had to reboot the thing occasionally, but maybe only once or twice a month. As a developer running alpha version apps on my phone that's quite an achievement.
- Usability - All the core apps work well. Some of them could definitely use an overhaul (Calendar and Music player specifically), but generally the core apps do their job nicely with one or two exceptions (see below)
- Battery Life - I get 30-32 hours out of the stock battery on an average day. For a smart phone this is great and much better than most other internet capable phones I've used.
- Performance - Event though the Droid has one of the slowest processors in the current smartphone lineup, it still does an admirable job and I rarely have to wait for it to do what I've asked it to, with a few exceptions (see below).
- Audio quality - both the call quality and loudspeaker sound really good. it's easy to hear the other caller on speakerphone and music doesn't sound as tinny as most other phones I've used.
- Network speed - Verizon's fast and available 3G network leaves me rarely searching for a WiFi connection.
And the bits that annoy me:
- Keyboard - the physical keyboard really isn't that great. In fact I prefer to use the onscreen keyboard.
- Camera - whilst the video capabilities are great, the still shots aren't as impressive. The lag between pressing the shutter button and getting the actual photo is frustrating. Pictures I take are often out of focus.
- Core 2.1 Images app - this is a great looking app and a significant improvement over the 2.0 version, however for me it seems buggy. Sometimes it won't load thumbnails, other times it goes totally crazy and flicks images all over the place.
In summary, I'm very happy with the phone and would recommend it (and indeed have done!) to anyone.
